8km South-East of Cobán, lies the largest Q’eqchi Mayan village in San Juan Chamelco. Our first stop here will be the prominent landmark of Church San Juan, said to be the first church built in Alta Verapaz, steeped in much history. -
Caves were an important site of Mayan pilgrimage and rituals. For the Maya people, caves served a sacred function. They were considered the holiest places on earth, a mystical underworld outside of normal time, where gods dwelled and Maya priests went to commune with them. -
The Rio Cahabon flows through the Alta Verapaz department in the eastern part of the country, between Lake Izabal and the capital city of Cobán. The Cahabon is one of Guatemala’s few rivers that has guided wild water rafting trips all year round. -
Laguna Lachuá National Park is a 14,500 hectare area of natural beauty, crystal clear waters and tropical rain-forest all set within a haven of peace and sheer tranquillity. -
This impressive cave system is sacred to the Q’eqchi Maya, and stretches continuously for some 29km (18 miles). -
Biotope del Quetzal, also known as Biotope Mario Dary Rivera, is a 2,580-acre (1,044-ha) protected area located about an hour outside Cobán. The reserve’s convenient location makes it a good place to stop and explore the region’s dense cloud forests. The lush, high-altitude cloud-forest ecosystem is the Quetzal’s natural habitat. -

You do not have to go far away from Quetzaltenango to visit one of the sanctuaries of Guatemala’s national bird.
