Caves were an important site of Mayan pilgrimage and rituals. For the Maya people, caves served a sacred function. They were considered the holiest places on earth, a mystical underworld outside of normal time, where gods dwelled and Maya priests went to commune with them. -
The Rio Cahabon flows through the Alta Verapaz department in the eastern part of the country, between Lake Izabal and the capital city of Cobán. The Cahabon is one of Guatemala’s few rivers that has guided wild water rafting trips all year round. -

The reserve’s convenient location makes it a good place to stop and explore the region’s dense cloud forests. The lush, high-altitude cloud-forest ecosystem is the Quetzal’s natural habitat. -
